Understanding Payload and Towing Capacity

Is there a difference between payload and towing capacity? Wine Automotive wants you to understand these words and how your truck works, so read on to learn more.

Both are based on your truck's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), which is the total amount of weight your truck can handle. Payload is how much your truck can carry. Determine the payload by finding out your vehicle's GVWR and subtracting the truck weight from that number. Towing capacity is the weight your truck can pull using something attached to the back of the vehicle. Trucks can tow more than they can carry but how much depends on the strength of the truck, the hitch and other factors, such as whether the vehicle has a towing package.
